The title of this article is the same as one of the most common questions I have been asked. It is a question that is problematic because it is incomplete. If someone asks ‘does acupuncture work?’ that gives me very little. A better question would be ‘what does acupuncture work on?’

At the most extreme I have used acupuncture to briefly restore the color orange to a trauma-induced color blind individual. More realistically I have prevented a friend from vomiting on his 21st birthday with acupressure, treated insomnia, hypertension, low energy, fatigue, digestion issues, rashes, constipation, and sinus issues. With a breathing exercise recommendation I helped a woman rid herself of hot flashes. I have treated all sorts of aches and pains ranging from moderate headaches to loss of feeling in the feet. With herbal formulas, I have helped

people alleviate psoriasis, sores, and menstrual cramps.

I do not practice only acupuncture, I am a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. Acupuncture is simply the insertion of needles, whereas what I do involves herbal supplement recommendations, dietary and health advice. This gives me a robust skill set to draw from and means I can treat quite a bit.

But back to the title question, ‘does acupuncture work?’ Well that depends on how well a person responds to treatment as well as what I am treating them for, and how long I have to work with them. It took me three months but I did get a cancer survivor looking and feeling better in that time. She was even able to avoid the cold that both her daughter and husband picked up. I have had people come into my office limping and walk out with almost no visible twinge. At the same time, I have had people come in with very persistent pain which I could reduce but never seem to make it go away.

Generally, acupuncture works very well for pain management, but I cannot realign your spine. I can reduce the physical symptoms of stress and point you in the direction of some stress and emotional management literature and techniques, but I am not a counselor. I can help your allergies, high blood pressure, and digestion but there are things that doctors and nutritionists can do that I cannot. So if you want to know if acupuncture can work for you, give me a call.
